| West Africa: Trade - FG Urged to Spearhead Ecowas Negotiations
The Federal Government has been called upon to take the lead in driving the Economic Community of West African States- Economic Partnership Agreement (ECOWAS-EPA) negotiations in order to guide the developing region towards effective regional integration and improved trade practices. Also the government of Nigeria was enjoined to cause a review of the Common External Tariff (CET) to ensure the adoption of common tariff structure that protects local industries and agricultural producers, allegedly because neither 20% nor 50% can give the kind of protection required for the achievement of Nigeria's industrialisation policy embedded in the development strategy. .

Sudan, Chad seek to ease border tensions
KHARTOUM: Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir yesterday signalled he was looking for a diplomatic way out of a crisis with Chad that has seen the two neighbours threatening military action against each other. Chad's President Idriss Deby Itno also pledged to improve relations with Sudan, a Libyan mediator said. The Sudanese government has accused the Chadian army of launching an attack on Monday that killed 17 of its soldiers. Chad denied any such deliberate assault, but said its forces had clashed with Sudanese troops after crossing the border to pursue Sudanese-backed rebels it accused of launching raids.
