Johns Hopkins Prof to join Wits

PROFESSOR Gilbert Khadiagala from the Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC is set to replace Prof John Stremlau as Professor and Chair of the International Relations Department at Wits.

Khadiagala, who is of Kenyan origin, will start work in September 2007.Since the departure of Stremlau, International Relations has been steered by the Acting Head, Prof Gareth Shelton, for more than a year. Prof Eric Worby, Head of the School of Social Sciences, said the delay in replacing him was due to the difficulties in finding funds for the transport of applicants to the university for interviews. "The School of Social Sciences did not have funds," said Worby. "We were dependent on the Human Resource Department at Wits."

Worby added that part of the delay may have been rooted in the change of deans in the Faculty of Humanities, as the dean played a key role in the appointment process.
