The Horn of Africa: a bitter anniversary

The international media have a remarkable proclivity for collective reticence, verging on amnesia, when reporting from Africa. It is an unfortunate fact that this vast continent just does not get the exposure it warrants, nor does it generate the public interest necessary to truly tackle its myriad problems. One such example that has now dragged catastrophically for half a decade and will doubtless go unheard until a war justifies media outlets to break their silence is the impasse between Eritrea and Ethiopia over their contested border.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the publication of the "decision" of the Eritrea - Ethiopia boundary commission "regarding delimitation of the border" - a document forged by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, bound by international law, and which both Eritrea and Ethiopia had agreed to ratify, whatever its findings.

Rent hikes frustrate tenants

SAN MATEO — Annie Sadler, a longtime resident of Hillsdale Garden Apartments, just saw the rent for her two-bedroom apartment jump by 22 percent, but she considers herself lucky.

For one thing, some of her neighbors in the 697-unit apartment complex have faced increases of more than 30 percent. More importantly, she has a Section 8 housing voucher, which means the San Mateo County Housing Authority pays $760 of her monthly rent.

But for residents of Hillsdale Garden who either do not qualify or have not applied for housing subsidies, the steep rent increases imposed by the complex's new owners have led to economic hardship.

Sadler is one of many residents at the complex — bought for $97.3 million in September by Essex Property Trust, a publicly traded company — who are retired and living on fixed incomes.
