School districts already addressing the problem of bullying by ...

Clearly, bullying is a terrible thing. The physical abuse that a youngster, or a group of youngsters, can heap upon a small, weaker, somehow more vulnerable juvenile is just the beginning. There can also be taunts and threats. Then there is the emotional toll it takes on its victims.

Matt Epling, a youngster who lived in East Lansing, is an example. Upperclassmen hazed him on the last day of school in 2002. Two months later, he committed suicide.

Welcome To The Gap

Skip Getz is taking the long way toward making his point. Literally. He's taking six weeks and walking 1,285 miles to do it.

The 45-year-old Los Gatos father of two is in the second week of "Skip's Walk," a self imposed trek from Los Gatos to Boulder, Colo. that passed out of Amador County on Monday to raise both money and awareness about a physical disability that afflicts his eldest son, a 6-year-old boy named Galen who is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. In the process, Getz is also making a pointed commentary about a medical system that fails to help its most vulnerable.

Because once Getz, who is himself recovering from a brain tumor doctors have just told him may require additional radiation, returns to work, he could lose the MediCal insurance that has so far covered his family.

Foreign Minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian, highly appreciating the importance of his meeting with his Russian colleague Sergey Lavrov, represented on a press conference the details of the meeting.

He added that Armenian-Russian cooperation is on a very high level aty present and includes almost all possible spheres. Mr. Lavrov reminded that his visit is dedicated to the 15-th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states.

Foreign Minister Lavrov said that he considers the Karabakh conflict unique in the world practice due to rather the mutual accordance of the mediators' approaches than the principles of its settlement.

Fund board to go ahead with lawsuit vs govt

The NMI Retirement Fund board of trustees has unanimously voted to pursue its pending lawsuit against the central government over unpaid debts following a failed settlement. The board made the decision during its meeting Monday. This came about soon after the court-appointed negotiation between the Fund and the Department of Finance broke down. The negotiation period was for 30 to 45 days."No settlement was achieved during this period so the board voted to proceed with the lawsuit," said Fund administrator Mark A. Aguon. The board earlier authorized its chairman, Juan T. Guerrero, to hold settlement discussions with the Finance Department. Guerrero, who met with Finance Secretary Eloy Inos on the matter, disclosed recently that what Finance is offering to pay the Fund is too low-"less than $100,000 a month."The government used to pay $500,000 to $800,000 per pay period or $1 million to $1.6 million a month for its employer contribution. The government is required to pay some $1.2 million per pay period or $2.5 million a month for its employees' retirement. The central government currently owes the Fund some $125 million in employer contribution."We're mindful of the current fiscal crisis facing the government but as trustees, we can't neglect our responsibility to protect the funds entrusted to us.
