On average, four Canadians are killed and 192 people are injured daily as a result of alcohol and/or drug-related crashes. About 25 percent of these people are in the 15 to 19 age group.

Students from St. Joseph's Elementary School and King Academy in Harbour Breton took an hour to learn one of life's most important lessons – don't not drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

On March 22, Mohammed Hashim, a National Youth Manager with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada and Ian Baker, an Outreach Field Representative with MADD Canada, gave a presentation to the students aimed at getting the above mentioned message across to the student body.

Mr. Hashim said the presentation was aimed at getting across several key points to the students.

Prosecution opens probe on leaking of FTA documents

The probe began at the request of the Foreign Ministry amid speculation that members of the National Assembly's Unification, Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee were involved.

A special parliamentary panel earlier looked into whether some committee members leaked the documents to a local newspaper before South Korea and the U.S. held the sixth round of free trade talks in January, but failed to obtain hard evidence.

Earlier this month, South Korean and U.S. administration officials reached a free trade agreement which they believe will boost their economic exchanges.

Jeffrey Liddle, a lawyer representing former Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. broker Christopher Pan, is accusing Sherri Hughes, a veteran NASD dispute resolution arbitrator, of having ruled on the merits of Mr. Pan's claim before his legal team has formally filed documentation related to the arbitration.

Mr. Liddle's charge is based on an e-mail Ms. Hughes sent to her fellow arbitration panelists --which was forwarded to Mr. Liddle -- in which Ms. Hughes instructed her colleagues to dismiss Mr. Pan's defamation claim against Merrill, according to the report.

Mr. Pan's claim accuses Ms.

Out of Our Past

25 years ago today, 1982: Social Security's trust fund could build up a $700 billion surplus by the year 2015, then plummet to a $7 trillion dollar deficit 40 years later, an expert told the National Commission on Social Security Reform.

50 years ago today, 1957: The price of haircuts went up to $1.75 in all Lakeview barbershops and most shops in Urbandale and Battle Creek. Local barbers who voted to raise prices had studied statistics showing barber's incomes lagging behind industrial workers' incomes.
