Ocean City Noise Control Board may get more teeth

OCEAN CITY -- The resort's Noise Control Board will get more teeth to enforce regulations under new proposals to be considered by the town council.

The mayor and council resolved to take measures at their work session to toughen the board's enforcement powers.

Nigeria: Gumi Charges Lawyers on Arbitration

The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Lawal Gummi, has said that mediation and arbitration were a faster way of settling disputes among parties. He also charged lawyers to take advantage of the multi-door court house as an alternative to litigation.

Gummi, who gave the advice in Abuja while declaring open a five-day AMDC workshop for neutrals, said that the participants were expected to lift the FCT high court to an enviable position.

Qualcomm and Nokia dispute intensifies

Qualcomm has filed an arbitration demand against Nokia with the American Arbitration Association, calling for an end to a dispute over a license agreement for patents in mobile handsets which ended this week.On Thursday, Nokia said it had paid Qualcomm $20m for patent licenses covering the second quarter 2007. Nokia said its obligations to pay license fees under the old agreements partially expired yesterday. The manufacturer said the payment did not extend, and is not related to, the old agreement.Rick Simonson, chief financial officer at Nokia, said: 'As we continue to negotiate the new cross-licence agreement, Nokia views this payment as fair and reasonable compensation for the use of relevant Qualcomm essential patents in Nokia UMTS handsets during Q2 of 2007. Nokia believes that Qualcomm's patent portfolio is concentrated in the United States, and that it has few or no alleged UMTS patents in many of the countries in which Nokia has substantial UMTS handset sales.


Lal Masjid, Govt negotiation succeeded

ISLAMABAD: Lal Masjid and government negotiations has succeeded to end stand- off over the demolition of mosque here on Wednesday. They said that the government had directed to release two teachers and two workers of the seminary. Moreover, the government has agreed to release five students and Khalid Khawaja within 15 days. They said that the seminary administration also agreed to release impounded vehicles in a good will gesture. Earlier the students of Jamiah Hafsa have taken hostage policemen along with their vehicles in retaliation of arrest of their three teachers by the Islamabad police. More than 20 young women from Jamia Hafsa madrassa burst into the brothel late on Tuesday, demanding it be shut down and kidnapped the owner popularly known as Auntie Shamim. On Wednesday a clash erupted between the students of the Jamiah and the police outside the Lal Mosque when police attempted to free the owner of the Brothel.
