April 20-22 Miscellenia

We've got this, that, and the other thing going on in the world of sports this weekend. And so, we roar into a lap of the sports world.......... ** So much for my anti-Toivonen rant earlier this week. Two days after getting crushed with five goals in Hartford, the Providence Bruins goalie tightened the leg pads and stopped 22 of 24 shots in a 4-2 P-Bruins win over the Wolfpack, tying that best-of-seven series at one. Curiously, this game saw a combined 39 shots on goal, hardly a big number by playoff standards. More to the tune of playoffs was the 94-shot double OT thriller between the Worcester Sharks and Manchester Monarchs, and after getting clubbed 5-2 in Game One the W-Sharks took it to Monarchs goalie Jason LaBarbera and lit up three goals. However it wasn't enough after John Zeiler nailed the game-winner with less than a minute to go in the second overtime.

Could Times-Hearst battle end with PI strictly online?

Visualize a Seattle Post-Intelligencer that exists only online. A paperless newspaper. The first American daily to make a leap that many observers predict the entire industry probably will make someday.

People have been speculating about an all-digital future for the endangered P-I ever since its owner, The Hearst Corp., and The Seattle Times Co. went to war nearly four years ago. That speculation is intensifying as the conflict approaches the beginning of the end.

On April 9, a private arbitrator will convene a closed-door hearing to decide the companies' long-running dispute over the future of their joint-operating agreement (JOA).

Hearst has said the P-I's continued existence is at stake. If it loses the arbitration, the P-I would find itself without the traditional newspaper underpinnings: no presses, warehouses, trucks or carriers.

District seeks injunction against striking teachers

HAYWARD — School officials today will request an injunction in hopes of ending striking teachers' fight for higher pay.

The teachers union, the Hayward Education Association, was notified of the development Thursday by a fax from Laurie Juengert, an attorney for the district, that said Hayward Unified will "seek injunctive relief through the Public Employment Relations Board," according to the union.

Union leaders said the matter is being reviewed by an attorney for the California Teachers Association.

"They want to take us to court, but the ruling from the court of public opinion is in," said Mercedes Faraj, union vice president and bargaining chair. "It is that (Superintendent Dale) Vigil, (Assistant Superintendent Barry) Schimmel and the school board are guilty of having no respect for Hayward teachers, students and parents."

School officials say the union's "bad-faith bargaining" prompted the injunction.

Service Manager, Community Safety & Development

This post offers an exciting opportunity to become part of a dynamic service area which is focussed on improving the lives of communities across North East Lincolnshire. 'Performance, Performance, Performance' is the mantra for North East Lincolnshire Council. We require an individual with the skills and ability to drive through change using the appropriate tools and techniques to achieve positive outcomes for local communities.Strategic and operational experience is required with a proven track record of delivering improvement in community safety related services. The postholder will need to demonstrate the ability to work in partnership with a range of agencies and communities and have an understanding of community safety related issues. Strong negotiation skills and legislative knowledge along with the ability to deliver change will be key to shaping future services.
