Gaston renovates strip mall for offices

After several months of work, Gaston County has turned a former downtown Gastonia shopping center into government offices through a $3.9 million renovation.

Once known as York Chester Square, the roughly 70,000-square-foot building at 410 W. Franklin Blvd. now houses N.C. Probation/Parole offices, the Gaston Mediation Center, county elections offices and the county's Alternative Community Penalties program.

The agencies moved from their old locations this month. Renovations at York Chester Square started after Gaston County commissioners approved a bid last spring.

The project was the second phase of renovations at York Chester Square. In 2004, Gaston County police moved from Remount Road into the former Curtain, Bed & Bath Outlet building at the center.

Review hospital phone rules plea

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust are being urged to come to a decision on the future use of mobile phones within their hospitals. The intervention comes following new safety advice on the use of mobile phones inside hospitals — and after a large increase in charges for the current bedside phone system, known as Patientline. Southport councillor Les Byrom, who is also on the Hospital Trust board, said there has been a gradual erasing of the strict no mobile policy at the hospital and added: "Phone use in hospitals is a hot topic in the press and I used the opportunity of last week’s Hospital Trust board meeting, to ask for a full report on a new policy that would enable patients, visitors and staff to make use of mobile phones whilst not compromising on safety, privacy or care. "Mobile phones ringing away would be a nuisance, but patients may feel more in touch and less isolated if they had an ability to use mobile phones occasionally, on silent mode, to keep in touch with friends and family.
