Instead, a mediator seeks to help parties to develop a shared understanding of the conflict and to work towards building a practical and lasting resolution. What techniques do you employ? I have to listen much. I have been inspired by the works of Fisher and Ury, notably Getting to yes. This book explains that a good agreement is one, which is wise and efficient and which improves the parties' relationship. Mediators use appropriate techniques and skills to open, improve dialogue between disputants, aiming to help the parties reach an agreement (with concrete effects) on the disputed matter. Normally, all parties must view the mediator as impartial. Mediation can apply in a variety of disputes. These include commercial, legal, diplomatic, workplace, community and divorce or other family matters.
‘W' alums hopeful for good weekend
Mississippi University for Women alumni are hoping the dispute over their affiliation with their alma mater won't keep them from having a good Homecoming weekend. “It's truly a time for us to enjoy friendships and to celebrate, and I really don't see this as a platform to discuss or take issue with any differences we have," said Renee Flynt, president of the one-month-old MUW Alumni Association.“We're all 'W girls' and really look forward to a wonderful weekend," said Susan Puckett, incoming president of the 117-year-old MUW Alumnae Association. However, she acknowledged their divided associations with MUW leaves a cloud of uncertainty over the alumni reunion.“I don't think anyone knows what to expect," Puckett said. .
Firefighter deal forged
EASTON | An arbitrator has handed down a three-year fire contract, ending a nearly 16-month stalemate between International Association of Firefighters Local 713 and the city administration. The deal is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2006, as firefighters have been working under a contract that expired in December 2005. Arbitrator Tom McConnell this week awarded raises of 2 percent in 2006 and 3 percent this year and in 2008, according to union President John McKenna. The sides agreed to binding arbitration, so the contract cannot be altered and city council has no choice but to approve the deal. Business Administrator Stu Gallaher said he will present the contract to city council April 25. He declined further comment until he's had more time to thoroughly review the contract.
QUALCOMM Files Arbitration Demand Against Nokia to Resolve Dispute ...
In an arbitration demand filed today with the American Arbitration Association, QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) requests a ruling that Nokias continued use of QUALCOMMs patents in Nokias CDMA cellular handsets (including WCDMA ) after April 9, 2007 constitutes an election by Nokia to extend its license under the parties existing agreement. Such an extension would obligate Nokia to pay QUALCOMM the same royalty specified in the current agreement and prohibit Nokia from asserting patent claims against QUALCOMMs CDMA products. QUALCOMM also seeks a ruling that it is entitled to terminate all of Nokias rights and licenses under the agreement if Nokia sues QUALCOMM for patent infringement after April 9, 2007. QUALCOMM and Nokia signed their current license agreement for CDMA products in July 2001.
Talks Begin Between PSC, Labour Minister & Unions
The first round of mediation talks between the Public Service Commission, the Labour Minister and three public sector unions took place this afternoon. Labour Minister Bernadette Ganilau who chaired the mediation talks confirmed to Village News that the discussions with the Fijian Teachers Association, Public Employees Union and the Viti Taukei Workers Union will be kept confidential. She only said that it is a good sign that the unions have come to the negotiation table. Representatives of the three unions, when approached by Village News also refused to comment saying details will be revealed later. Ganilau also confirmed that she has meetings scheduled with the other public sector unions, however she did not confirm whether this was part of the mediation talks. Minister for Public Service Poseci Bune also refused to comment when questioned on what is being negotiated to ensure the unions do not stage a strike over the five percent pay cut and the reduction of the retirement age in the civil service.
