Colombia should withdraw WTO arbitration request

Tholen - According to Adrianus Koetsenruijter, the delegate of the European Commission for Colombia and Ecuador, commented to a Colombian newspaper that the country should better not submit an arbitration request to the WTO concerning the European banana import tariff. Compared to the previous system of import licenses combined with an import tariff much has improved already, while now one only has to deal with an import tariff. The main interest of Colombia lies with market access and not as much with the actual import tariff. The market access has already much improved. Therefore the solution to the present discontentment would be the withdrawal of the WTO demand, negotiation and the demonstration of how the exports have developed under the new system the past year, according to Koetsenruijter.

Montgomery admits bank fraud

FORMER world 100m record-holder Tim Montgomery pleaded guilty today in connection with a multi-million-dollar bank fraud and money-laundering scheme.

The plea was announced in New York by his lawyer, Robert McFarland, who declined to discuss details. Montgomery was charged last year along with his athletics coach Steven Riddick and 11 others in an alleged conspiracy to deposit $6.2 million in stolen, altered or counterfeit cheques at several banks over three years. He retired in 2005 after he was banned for two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for doping linked to the investigation of the San Francisco-area based BALCO lab, which was the focus of a US government investigation into doping in sports.

Jet pays Rs400 crore to close Air Sahara buyout deal

Mumbai: The Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways paid Rs400 crore to Air Sahara promoters, closing the deal for takeover of the ailing carrier Air Sahara.

Jet has paid Rs400 crore, which it was required to pay by April 20 - the deadline set by the arbitration panel - to the promoters of Air Sahara. This marks the closure of the deal, company sources said.

Under the revised offer, approved by arbitrators, all shares of Air Sahara will be transferred to Jet for Rs1,450 crore, which includes the Rs500 crore Jet paid last year.

Jet was asked to pay Rs400 crore on or before April 20 and another Rs550 crore in four interest-free equal annual instalments starting March 2008.

There is, however, confusion over the actual deal size with Air Sahara president Alok Sharma maintaining that the enterprise value was "close to Rs2,000 crore.
