Nuclear commission cites contractor misconduct at TVA plant

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A nuclear inspection agency said today a contractor committed misconduct at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Alabama.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said foreman Robbie Balentine allowed sandblasting inside the plant's Unit 1 reactor to remove paint.

That resulted in a contamination event involving a painter and a violation of the plant's license related to radiation protection.

The painter had a very low contamination dose, nothing to cause ill health.

T-V-A hopes to return the reactor to service in May after a 22-year shut-down.

Scandal, political tensions spur demands for Wolfowitz’s ouster at ...

Pressure for the resignation of Paul Wolfowitz as president of the World Bank escalated over the weekend in the wake of a Group of Seven (G7) finance ministers meeting in Washington, where several participants suggested his position was untenable.

French Finance Minister Thierry Breton, for example, declined to say whether he believed Wolfowitz should be ousted but declared that the World Bank should be “ethically irreproachable," an obvious reference to the seedy scandal involving a hefty pay raise and promotion for Wolfowitz's girlfriend, Shaha Riza, a Libyan-born British citizen who was a career bureaucrat at the World Bank before US President George W. Bush appointed him to head the agency a little over two years ago.

“I fully trust the governing board to draw the consequences it must draw," added Breton.

Bridgeport Loses Bid To Avoid Paying

The city of Bridgeport has suffered a withering blow to its assertion that it should not have to pay a multi-million dollar arbitration award in connection with construction of The Arena at Harbor Park because the contract was tainted by corruption.

The state Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision released Monday, said the city's contention that the corrupt acts of former Mayor Joseph Ganim and his cohorts rendered the contract with C.R. Klewin Northeast illegal amounted to "too little, too late."

OSCE Chairman concerned about Ukraine developments

( OSCE ) - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, expressed concern following the disruption of constitutional court hearings in Kyiv by demonstrators yesterday.

"It is particularly important that all political forces, as well as citizens, show restraint and a high sense of responsibility in the resolution of this crisis," said Minister Moratinos.

" Ukraine has made a clear choice for democracy. The current political crisis should be solved relying on democratic mechanisms and political dialogue. Street protests are a sign of public participation which I appreciate, but this crisis is not going to be resolved by clashes in the streets."

On 18 April, protesters besieged Kyiv's constitutional courthouse, preventing judges from starting a second day of deliberations before riot police dispersed them.
