| Kennedy named Ombuds officer
Have you ever been in an argument? Surely everyone has at some point or another, but sometimes arguments or minor disputes can turn into much more serious issues and can even lead to legal disputes. What can you do to prevent this? The Office of the Ombuds at Michigan Tech, which was created in 1969, provides just the solution. The purpose of the office is to provide confidential, impartial and informal conflict resolution services to faculty, staff and students prior to the filing of any formal grievance. The Ombuds seeks to resolve conflicts through informal mediation efforts. President Glenn Mroz has officially named William Kennedy, who has been temporarily filling the office since the summer of 2005, to the position. In 2005-06 our Ombuds Officer, Dr. Peck Cho, went on a sabbatical leave, therefore, the Senate approved the temporary appointment of Dr.

Chile and Malaysia to Start FTA Talks
Santiago de Chile, Apr 19 (Prensa Latina) A Chilean high level delegation started negotiations with Malaysia to establish a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, said Chile's Palace of La Moneda (Government House) Thursday. Andres Rebolledo, Director of Economic Bilateral Affairs of the General Direction of Economic International Relations (DIRECON), was the head of the Chilean delegation in Australia. Rebolledo regarded the conversations as "a first session to approach and talk about the program and define the reach of future negotiation." The first round of talks will be held at the beginning of June in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. Both countries made a study last year, to evaluate the possibility to sign a Free Trade Agreement, and the study recommended such an agreement would stimulate commercial exchange between the two countries.
Opening Door To Arbitration
WASHINGTON -- The Securities and Exchange Commission is exploring a new policy that could permit companies to resolve complaints by aggrieved shareholders through arbitration, limiting shareholders' ability to sue in court. The initiative is at the discussion stage and may not lead to any changes in rules or practices. EU: Risking an emancipated Turkey
In December last year, EU leaders decided to temporarily suspend eight of Turkey's 35 accession negotiation chapters due to Ankara's failure to open its ports to trade from the EU. This major setback coincided with the French National Assembly's approval of a bill a few months earlier criminalizing the denial of the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1915. There is a widespread feeling in Turkish society that the process of accession negotiations is highly influenced by the political climate and by domestic considerations on the part of the EU member states - a perception that makes even the modern Turkish youth (who generally tend towards pro-European attitudes) suspicious of joining the Western club. Unfortunately, this is a development that has gone largely unnoticed in Europe.
